Almost 70% of all freight crossing the US-Mexico border was done by truck in previous years. With these figures in mind, shippers should ensure that transportation regulations and procedures are all met so as to have a successful freight transportation.

  1. Safety and Security – Not only for cross-border shipments, but for all shipments, safety and security of the driver and cargo is the top priority on our list.  Carrier should ensure they are CTPAT (Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism) compliant, and has highly secure facilities at the U.S.-Mexico border.
  2. Stay updated as regulations are constantly changing – Due to high volume of freight passing through the U.S.-Mexico border, the regulations are constantly being changed.    It is imperative to keep current with these changes in policies so that the shipment is done seamlessly without any unforeseen hiccups.
  3. Ideal Transportation Mode – Most of the freight being efficiently moved from Mexico into the U.S. is done by truckload.  If there is not a time-frame for the job to get done and going over 500 miles, then an intermodal may be considered as an alternative.
  4. Tracking made possible – This is super important for shippers to work with carriers that can provide tracking systems so that whether within the U.S. or in Mexico, there is a clear locator of where the freight is currently moving.
  5. Transloading services can help – Service centers at the border can assist with speeding up transitions from one mode to another so that the shipment gets across the border much quicker.
  6. LTL Consolidation – Less-than-truckload (LTL) services is a cost savings option as the consolidation of freight before crossing the border is available to transport freight from the U.S. into Mexico.
  7. Documents Preparations – Most may find that this may be the most time consuming process when working with customs to acquire all the documents needed.  Shippers are encouraged to thoroughly review all paperwork and submit the necessary files atleast 24 hours prior to be received.
